" Anacardium "

The Anacardium patient does not
merely shows the characteristics of split
personality but instead it shows a
complete picture of Schizophrenia.
Before dealing with the mental picture
of Anacardium, it is necessary to
understand what are the basic
characters of a split personality or a
schizophrenic patient. So for the same
reason, I quote the following text from
the book “Introduction to Psychology”
by ‘Hilgard and Atkinson’:
“The word ‘schizophrenic’ is derived
from the Greek word schizen (“to split “)
and phren (“mind “). The split does not
refer to multiple personalities, but
rather to a splitting of the thought
process from emotions. The primary
characteristics of schizophrenia can be
summarized as under:
1. Disturbance of affect: The schizophrenic
does not show emotions in a normal way.
He usually appears dull and pathetic , or
he may display inappropriate emotions.
2. Withdrawal from active interchange with
the realistic environment: The
schizophrenic loses interest in the people
and events around him.
3. Autism: Withdrawal from reality is usually
accompanied by absorption in an inner
fantasy world . The state of self-absorption
is known as autism.
4. Delusion and hallucination: The most
common delusions of the schizophrenic
are the beliefs that external forces are
trying to control his thoughts and actions
( delusions of influence ) or that certain
people or groups are persecuting him
( delusion of persecution ). Auditory
hallucinations are more common than
visual ones-the schizophrenic frequently
hears voices. When persecutory delusions
or hallucinations are predominant, the
person is called paranoid. He may
become suspicious of friends or relatives,
fear that they are poisoning him, complain
that he is being watched, followed and
talked about.
5. Bizarre behavior: the schizophrenic’s
behavior may include peculiar gestures ,
movements, and repetitive acts that make
no sense to the observer but are closely
related to the schizophrenics fantasy
world.
6. Disturbed thought process .”
After this basic discussion on
schizophrenia, the mental symptoms of
Anacardium are being listed in rubric
forms. After going through the

 CASE . In the fall of 1899 I was called to
a lady, married, 35 years of age, mother
of three children.
She was quite emaciated, with a
yellowish cachectic look of the face. A
couple of years before I treated her
when she had an attack of vomiting, in
which she vomited coffee-ground
substances.
She was relieved at that time by a dose
of ARSENICUM ALB ., 40m., but had more
or less trouble with her digestion up to
this time. This last attack was more
persistent and did not yield to
ARSENICUM and some other remedies.
After awhile it appeared that the PAIN
(which was very severe) AND VOMITING
CAME ON WHEN THE STOMACH WAS
EMPTY . She had to eat once or twice in
the night for relief. The substance
vomited was always black or brown
looking like coffee grounds. Her sister
had been operated for cancer of the
breast, and of course she was very
nervous and fearful of cancer of the
stomach. ANACARDIUM relieved
promptly, and she has had no return of
the trouble since then. Whether the cure
is complete remains to be seen, but the
benefit from the remedy was
unquestionable.

One man came to see me specifically because he felt so stressed about having to decide upon some direction in life. He had previously worked as a salesman, which he found unsatisfying, but when he came to consider the choices available to him he entered a peculiar agony of anxiety and indecision, which was very intense. His whole appearance was one of intense distress, and he talked about his difficulties in making choices as if he were being tortured. This kind of intensity of distress associated with talking about problems is seen in Aurum, but Aurum does not have the same degree of indecision, and my patient was not depressed as such. He said he had always had difficulty in making decisions, and though he was engaged to be married, he was tormented by the thought that there may be 'someone else out there' who was his real soul mate. He was a very intense man, with very serious interests, and I initially gave him Natrum Muriaticum, which did not act. He then told me that as a child he would lie awake at night praying to God not to let him be possessed. This made me realise he needed a psychotic remedy, and in view of his indecision I gave Anacardium 10M, which greatly calmed his distress, and enabled him to make some rational decisions about his future. I have had one more case where the only indication for Anacardium, apart from a few weak physicals, was this intense agony of indecision. It seems that the more integrated Anacardium person is still torn between two wills, but this takes the form of severe indecision, rather that a battle between good and evil.
