Bryonia personality –Rich person with

Chief action bryonia is on serous

membrane, mucous membrane and liver.

Serous membrane of lungs (pleura), heart

(pericardium), head (meninges) and joints

comes under its action. So it is useful in

pleuritis , pericarditis, synovitis,

meningitis etc

Under its action on mucous membranes.

Bryonia produces great dryness of

mucous membranes so we can see dry

cracked lips, very hard stool and

constipation.

Bryonia types of persons (Persons having

bryonia type of personality) have very

great fear of poverty in their mind. They

always talk about money matters, talking

about their business and constant

worrying about money.

Even their dreams are centred on money

or business deals. There is worry in their

mind that who will take care of them in

case there business fail. When they

started to think about it there is one

question in their mind that who will help

them in such a situation of financial

disaster so they always feel unsupported

and insecure.

One more mental aspect of bryonia

personality is Capriciousness. Always

want something but does not know what

they actually want. When something is

offered to them they refuse it immediately.

This is observed in children mainly for

toys.

Thirst is for large quantities of water at a

time. They drink 1-2 glass easily at a

time.

This symptom is very reliable in acute

complaints especially in summer

complaints whether it is diarrhoea or fever

it does not matter.

Constitutionally persons need this energy

are warm blooded and are very much

aggravated from heat , in summer season,

or from heat of the sun .

Another peculiarity is whatever may be

their complaint it gets better by absolute

complete rest (whether it is vertigo, joint

pain, or headache ) and lying on painful

parts

When they are worse?

Answer is motion of effected parts. It is

the least motion which these persons can

not tolerate which aggravates their

sufferings. So they want to be lie perfectly

quiet because even least motion of

affected parts increased their sufferings.

Comparison of Bryonia,Nux Vomia,Pulsatilla

 In Gastric Disorders

           All these three medicines have

Sensation as of a stone in stomach. But

pulsatilla has less in sensation as

compare to other two medicines.

     Bryonia leads in thirst, needs large

quantities of water, Pulsatilla needs very

little or no thirst.

     Bad taste in mouth is common

symptom in all three medicines, here

Nux vomica has Sour taste and Bryonia

and Pulsatilla has bitter taste.

Causation of gastric disorder are quite different in these medicines.

Bryonia disorders are due to dietetic

errors when warm weather starts after

colds. Pulsatilla disorders are due to

Rich food, Pastries, Fatty food, IceCream. Nux vomica disorders are result of Over eating, inactivity, drugs abuse,

tobacco, coffee, alcohol , in brief we can

say high living.

         All these medicines have Nausea,Vomiting, diarrhea. Bryonia

symptoms are worse on motion, on

rising from bed. Nux vomica symptoms

are worse in morning and due to

overeating. Pulsatilla symptoms are

worse in evening and night , worse by

eating. Nux vomica diarrhea is

dysenteric type and pulsatilla diarrhea is

with great rumbling.

          All these medicines have Thick,white

coating on tongue but modalities,

temperament, causation differ these

medicines.

      Nux vomica likes covering always,

Pulsatilla better in open air and Bryonia

worse when hot weather starts after colds.

Tox, together forever…

The whole question of movement

aggravates or ameliorates in Bryonia and

Rhus Tox is so frequently highlighted, but

what about the full remedies? What

makes them so similar? What else can be

used to differentiate them?

Bryonia is often mentioned for those

worrying about business. Well – sorry

folks, but symptoms  of Rhus Tox show that where

worries about business are concerned,

Rhus Tox is no slouch:

 When he tried to go to sleep his

business presented itself to him in a

dream, in an anxious manner.

 In the evening when asleep he talks

half aloud about his daily business (aft.

12 h.).

 At night he talks in his sleep about

his business, wishes to throw away

everything, and longs for one thing or

another.

Both are worse for stooping, both have

nosebleeds (although Bry could have

them while sleeping), both hear noises in

the ears, both can be very thirsty.

Both are worse from treading, although in

Rhus Tox, it’s more localized, whereas in

Bryonia it can be a general aggravation

and a headache aggravation too.

Both are worse after eating, but in Rhus

Tox it is stronger and more marked. Both

can have sneezing and hoarseness. Both

can be worse from walking in the open air

and perspiring.

So far, in so many ways, these two

remedies seem to be running neck and…

er…clammy perspiring neck…

A significant difference can be seen

regarding restlessness, night and dreams.

Both remedies can have bad nights, but

Rhus Tox’s bad nights are compounded

by restlessness. From the description in

the provings, the following picture

emerges: Rhus Tox can’t get to sleep, is

very restless and doesn’t get much dream

action. Bryonia is less restless and does

get enough sleep to dream – but is not

sleeping well and the dreams and

delusions are not the pleasant kind.

Rhus has twice as many restlessness

symptoms in the proving, and it is

noticeable that the restlessness relates to

the night, to the disposition and to the

general organism, whereas in Bryonia it is

only at night and during dreams.

There are some medicines (e.g., ignatia, also bryonia and rhus, and sometimes belladonna) whose power of altering man's health consists chiefly in alternating actions - a kind of primary-action symptoms that are in part opposed to each other. Should the practitioner find, on prescribing one of these, selected on strict homoeopathic principles, that no improvement follows, he will in most cases soon effect his object by giving (in acute diseases, even within a few hours) a fresh and equally small dose of the same medicine.1

So, also under ordinary medical treatment, an old chronic disease remains uncured and unaltered if it is treated according to the common allopathic method, that is to say, with medicines that are incapable of producing in healthy individuals a state of health similar to the disease, even though the treatment should last for years and is not of too violent character.1 This is daily witnessed in practice, it is therefore unnecessary to give any illustrative examples.

Foot Note-1:  But if treated with violent allopathic remedies, other diseases will be formed in its place which are more difficult and dangerous to life.

  Usually you will find the delirium commencingabout 9 P.M., and keeping up all night like the fever.

The acute mental state you will find manifesting its symptoms on rising in the morning, but as the febrile state advances and takes possession of him the symptoms will take on a 9 P.M. aggravation; those who have chill will have it at 9 P.M.; in those who have a fever, the fever will come at 9 P.M.

If mental symptoms are uppermost they increase and spread over the night. It has a 3 P- M aggravation. Bell. will begin at 3 and run on towards midnight, but Bryonia will begin at 9P.M. and run on through the night.

The aggravation of the Chamomilla patients, who are also extremely irritable, is at 9 A.M. Sometimes we go to the bedside and can hardly distinguish between Bryonia and Cham. because they are both so spunky, but the Cham. baby is worse at 9 A.M. and the Bryonia baby is worse at 9 P.M.

  Bad effects from mortification."

"Ailments arising from chagrin; " these are headaches usually.

Violent, congestive headaches that come on a few hours after altercation or controversy, or little misunderstandings with somebody that he cannot talk back to, will be covered by Staph., but Bryonia also has that.

Staph. is suited to irritable, violent, nervous, excitable people, that get into violent altercation or dispute. If a headache comes on, such a patient may need Bryonia.

Once you have seen an acute Bryonia case you are not likely to forget it. I remember the first acute case I ever treated...a man with bronchitis. I visited him in his home, where he lived with another man.*

  As I entered his room,he was sitting on the bed facing the wall, his back turned to me,  I asked "How are you? How do you feel" He would not answer me. nor would he turn to face me. Throughout the entire interview I was to get him to turn around.  His fever was very high and he had such a painful cough that he had to hold his chest and let out weak little coughs.When I asked what he ate,* his friend replied* that he only took water*.

Bry vs rananculus bulb

I shall now discuss the two remedies

mentioned above and then give a brief

case which I attended and after careful

study chose Ranunculus bulbosus.

As we all know, Bryonia-a member of

the watermelon family, a polychrest-has

three great fields of action: (1) respiratory,

(2) gastrointestinal, (3) arthritic, the main

effect being on serous membranes and

the viscera they contain, as dura,

pericardium and pleura.

The Bryonia patient is always a toxic

case., It affects the constitution of a

robust, firm fiber and dark complexion

with tendency to leanness and irritability.

It prefers the outside, evening, open, air,

warm weather after cold days, to manifest

its action most markedly.

In the respiratory field we have the

hard dry cough, sharp shooting pains; or

in the gastrointestinal field the coated

tongue, dry mucous membranes, feeling

of stone in the stomach, nausea when

arising; and again in the arthritic field the

red, swollen, tender joints-and all these

symptoms explained by dehydration

toxicity. For these reasons we find the

Bryonia Patient sluggish, < on motion;

profuse hot sweat with intense thirst: <

from warmth, exertion and touch; cannot

sit up; > lying on painful side, > from rest,

pressure and cold things. The skin is

characteristic: yellow, pale, swollen or

dropsical, hot and painful. Hair very

greasy. It is a right-sided remedy.

In the case of RANUNCULUS bulbosus

or buttercup we find that this remedy acts

especially upon the muscular tissue and

skin and has its most characteristic

effects upon the chest wall as in

pleurodynia. It acts on nerves and serous

surfaces and is mainly left-sided. The

sensations are variable as seen with the

bruised sensation under the sternum, ribs,

intercostal spaces, to pains of a stitching,

shooting, character.

General characteristics of this drug

are obtuseness of the senses,

quarrelsome, angry mood, easily provoked,

does not like to be left alone. The

modalities: cannot lie on the affected side,

< inspiring or moving; < dampness, cold,

drafts, touch. Cant rest; anxious,

oppressed breathing; > sitting up, walking

or bending forward. Skin: Burning, intense

itching. Eczema with vesicles. Corns

sensitive.

On July 11, 1938 a male patient age

67 presented the following picture. During

the first week in July he complained of

sharp pain in his chest, awaking him in

the early morning hours. He found that he

had some relief on sitting up or walking,

but could cause the pain to become quite

severe by taking a deep breath. This pain

was < on motion while lying down and it

was impossible to lie on the affected side.

Breathing appeared dyspnoeic at times.

Patient has had a rheumatic diathesis

since 1920. Five years ago he suffered

from coronary attack (thrombosis). Has

had all possible foci of infection removed.

He had been in apparent good health until

recent illness which took place while

patient was travelling from West Coast

east. Heart and lungs negative. G. U. tract

negative.

Physical examination showed on

much pressure tenderness over and above

floating rib, left side; tenderness

suprascapular region left side and less

tenderness anterior right chest between

sixth and seventh ribs. Pain did not

radiate, nor was it along course of nerves

under ridge border. Rheumatic diathesis, <

damp weather; changeable weather.

Patient is of light texture, medium in build

and for year has been troubled with an

eczema of face, scaly skin < shaving. Ran,

b. 2c. given. In forty-eight hours much

relief.

On July 19th remedy was repeated in

the same potency, with apparent complete

recovery.

  The pathological process related to bryonia is fibrinous inflammation.  Here again we perceive the basic character of the drug , " fibrinous inflammation" being a kind of dry " inflammation with little serum exeudation, leading to depositsvof fibrin IMPEDING MOTION and finally to adhesions which ABOLISH MOTION altogether.

Prevention of movement, of the free flow of the secretions and discharges underlies  likewise the etiological factors which are known to provoke the mentioned pathological conditions:

Checking of perspiration,

Of the menstrual flow,

Of milk secretion,

Of exanthemata. 

Anger and its suppression are known as etiological factors of syndromes calling for Bryonia.

Suppressed resentment and hostility are now considered as etiological importance in Rheumatoid Arthritis. Which often exhibits the typical Bryonia symptoms.

The effect of anger and its repression, preventing bile flow, are well known.

Also, in the emotional sphere , a process of inhibition of the free flow, of the moving of emotionsvis indicative of the action of Bryonia..
